OK I saw no posts in this so thought Id just tell you like my mun tought me.

Get all your old stale bread, brown or white and soak it in water in a clean washing up bowl.(doesn't matter how much or little as long as it will fit into the baking tray you're gonna use)
When its soaked squeeze it out in your hands and put it into a mixing bowl.
Add some knobs of lard and some butter (just judge the amount to make the mixture not too greasy)
Add some mixed fruit and peel (any fruit will do. Cherries make it a bit lush)
then add mixed spice. Add enough to make the pudding look nice and rich and darkish)
Oh then add some sugar (not too much remember the fruit will make it sweet as well)
Mix it up with your hands. Squeezing it through your fingers ( remember to take of any nice rings you may be wearing beforehand cos it tends to mess em up)
If it feels a bit dry then add some more fat And if you're not sure if its gonna be sweet enough just taste it.
Bake it in the oven on medium heat until the knife comes out clean or until it feels firm to the touch.
You can also steam it in a pudding basin for those who don't like burnt currents on the top. Comes out a bit paler but tastes just as good. You can add nuts and all sorts if you really wanna zazz it up too. I made some once for an opera group I belonged to and they wouldn't leave me alone after that "when are you gonna make some more bread pud"????
It's a womans perogative!

Of course I don't have real bread now so I can't make it any more, but if you'd like me to make you some save up all your old bread and I'll do it.

Sounds about just like my mums.

Wont be making any soon as i think it is a winter thing to fill ya belly on a cold day.

Might hold you to making us one in the winter though.  We can all sit around a candle at your place with a blanket around our shoulders and talk about old biking injuries, well that's what we do here.
There is no such thing as "can't" you can if you want to.
